Driving Tour of Young County
Our local historian often says “Fort Worth is where the West begins but Young County is where the West happened.” The area is rich in history with stories about cattle drives, Indian raids, frontier settlers and black gold. An audio CD narrated by Red Steagall and an accompanying map, the tour takes you to some of the most interesting historical sites in the Frontier West. Tours are available, contact the Graham Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau to purchase a copy at 940.549.0401.
Fort Belknap
Fort Belknap was established in 1851 as a second-line frontier fort to protect both the settlers and Native Americans from each other. The Fort became the hub network of roads, most notably the Butterfield Overland Mail route. In 1859 the Indian reservations were dissolved which also led to the decommissioning of Fort Belknap that year.
In celebration of the Texas Centennial, portions of the fort were restored or reconstructed in 1936. The fort’s original magazine structure is still standing, and the reconstruction included the cornhouse, commissary, two barracks, and the well. A period kitchen house was also added. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 1-5 p.m.; Closed Wednesdays. For more information, call 940.846.3222. Available for rentals.
